Healthy Recipes for Your Air Fryer
In today’s post we’ll take a look at why air frying is a better alternative to other deep-frying methods and also look at some healthy air fryer recipes you can try today.
This could be another great way to save you time in the kitchen and probably kickstart your journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
What is Air Frying?
Technically speaking an air fryer doesn’t fry food with hot air.
In fact they actually do not fry any food at all.
Think of it instead as a smaller version of what a convection oven does.
Basically you have a fan that distributes heated air onto your food allowing it to cook a lot quicker than it would normally take.
That in essence is where the air fryer’s rise to fame comes from – quicker food preparation and healthier food options compared to the alternative.
Are Air Fryers Healthy?
One of the biggest reasons air fryers are considered healthy is because they use little to no oil compared to traditional deep frying methods.
I have to say healthy is a subjective term here because fried food is still fried food and you need to take into consideration how much of it you’re eating.
Still the fact that air fryers use no oil means lesser calorie intake which is a lot more beneficial for your overall health.
Another topic of concern is whether air fryers can cause any food toxicity or any possible exposure to harmful chemicals such as carcinogens that increase the risk for cancer.
Good news is studies have shown air frying technology greatly reduces harmful compounds such as acrylamide (which is likely carcinogenic) compared to other conventional deep frying methods.
The final issue here is do air fryers destroy the nutrients in your food?
Short and simple answer here is Yes – but no matter what form of cooking you use, there is always a reduction in the amount of nutrients.
Some are obviously better than others depending primarily on the amount of cooking time.
Air fryers have shorter cooking times which allows them to retain more nutrients than you would with other methods of cooking.
So all-in-all if we are comparing air frying to other cooking methods especially deep frying then it is a much healthier alternative for you.
Pros and Cons of An Air Fryer
– Saves you time & effort in the kitchen.
– Uses much less oil than conventional frying which means healthier food.
– Relatively safer than other deep frying methods.
– Less exposure to trans fat and other harmful compounds such as acrylamide.
– It is versatile. Different models allow for other options besides just air frying.
– Perfect for quick, small meals.
– Easy clean up.
– Easy to use once you get the hang of it.
– Tastes aren’t always consistent. (Depends on the model you have and the foods you’re preparing).
– Takes up a lot of counterspace.
– Not always the cheapest.
– Not ideal for large family meals.
– Could be a little intimidating to use at first.
Personally I say the pros do outweigh the cons but it’ll be naive of me to say an air fryer is perfect for everyone.
They’re ideally perfect for someone who enjoys deep-fried foods and needs a healthier option or someone with a busy schedule that has limited time in the kitchen.
You know your needs better than I do but since you’re reading this post I can safely assume it is something you’ve considered or already have.
Either way it’s not a bad idea as long as you actually put it to use.
