I probably need to reword the title to “The Best Meal Delivery Services You Should Try…“
Anyway that’s an aside for now and as you read along you’ll (hopefully) get a better understanding of the point I’m trying to make here.
Since meal kit delivery services are becoming more and more popular I figured I’d help my fellow meal preppers with a comparison of some of the best meal delivery services I’ve come across so far.
The goal here is to show you what they have to offer and to help you determine which option will be a good fit for you.
I want you to make the best decision for yourself if indeed a meal delivery service is something you’re interested in.
Here’s the list of the best meal delivery services for 2020 I compared:
- Martha & Marley Spoon
- Blue Apron
- Fresh n’ Lean
- Takeout Kit
- Purple Carrot
- Sun Basket
- Green Chef
- Bistro MD
- Factor 75
- Trifecta Nutrition

How Do Meal Delivery Services Work?
As the name suggests, meal delivery services are companies or businesses that send either fresh ingredients or fully prepared meals for you to make at home.
They do the grocery shopping, meal proportioning and in some cases most of the prep and cooking all in an attempt to help you eat healthier while spending less time in the kitchen.
All the meals you select are properly packaged to maintain freshness and delivered straight to your home.
From there all you need to do is either follow the recipe instructions or warm up the ready-made meals in a microwave or stovetop as suggested.
Although the different services may have different plans and meal options available, they typically all serve the same purpose:
To free up some of the time you spend in the kitchen, to help you add healthy varieties to your meals, and to eliminate the guesswork or stress that comes with meal prep.
In other words if you need someone to do a majority or all of the work for you then meal delivery services are the way to go.
Let’s take a look at what each one has to offer.
Affiliate Disclosure: All the companies on here where independently reviewed by me based on the quality of their services and the value they can provide for you.
The post does however include some affiliate links meaning I’ll earn a small commission if you purchase or sign up using those links.
I do appreciate any support for this content and helping the blog grow.
Here’s a little insight into how I compared the different meal kit delivery services.
Just the different factors that came into play.
No matter which service you select, the more you buy, the lower the cost per meal.
So in order to get more meals and more bang for your buck it makes more sense to go with the 4 person or family options.
The costs you’ll see in the tables below reflect the lowest price available. Full pricing is included in the descriptions.
In some cases you have the option to order single meals (a la carte) if it’s something you’d rather do.
- Meal vs Recipe vs Serving
The terms are used so interchangeably that even I started to get confused at one point.
Simply put 1 meal = 1 recipe.
Serving refers to the number of people it can feed. So 2 servings for example means enough for 2 people and so on.
The tables show you the lowest total number of meals you can get per week.
- Most (if not all) of the subscriptions are automatic
That means once you order your first meals you are automatically signed up for recurring weekly deliveries AND payments.
In most cases there are options for you to skip a week or cancel your subscriptions but you need to be well aware of what the policies are and customer service availability.
Very important step to remember if you’re just trying out their services.
- Discounts and Promos
Most of these companies offer some sort of discount or promotional offer for new customers.
That’s something to take advantage of to see which one works best.
PRO TIP: For the average person, I believe meal delivery services are best used as a complement to the meals you already prep for yourself.
Ideally as a means to free up more time for other activities.
If you haven’t already, please read this article on whether meal delivery services are worth it or not and the recommended way to use them.
Best Meal Delivery Services (#1 - 3)
1 - Dinnerly
Dinnerly is the most affordable of all the meal delivery services listed on here.
They attribute their low cost to fewer ingredients, less packaging and less money spent on advertising.
Another way they minimize their cost is by sending you digital recipes on their app instead of the printed ones with the ingredients.
The ingredients you receive are mostly organic and are sent fresh for you to prepare from scratch.
Keep in mind a few staples such as salt, pepper, sugar and so on are not included as they expect you to have those.
You can choose to make your meals vegetarian but there isn’t much more in terms of other specialty diets such as keto, gluten-free, etc.
They do have kid-friendly recipes.
Dinnerly offers 2 plans.
The 2 person box (min. 3 meals/person each week) at $4.99/meal.
The Family box for 4 people (min. 3 meals/person each week) at $4.49/meal.
$8.99 Shipping Fee

Their menu rotates weekly with about 9 different meals for you to select from each week.
As far as specialty diets go, there are no options for vegans, vegetarians, keto or gluten-free.
The limited menu and diet options are compensated for in the cost and proportions of the meals you get.
EveryPlate offers 2 plans.
The 2 person plan (min. 3 meals/person each week) at $4.99/meal.
The 4 person plan (3 meals/person each week) at $4.99/meal.

The recipes are included with the packaging you receive and the instructions are simple to follow and categorized according to difficulty level.
Not all the ingredients are organic but they do have diet options for vegetarians, carb-conscious or calorie-conscious.
All meals start at $6.99/meal (min. 2 meals/person each week).
Options for 2, 4 or 6 people.

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise that after all the years creating thousands of recipes on different platforms, Martha Stewart teamed up with Marley Spoon for this chef-inspired meal kit delivery service.

All the ingredients needed are included and are well sorted and proportioned according to the different recipes you selected.
They have options for anyone who is on a vegan, non-dairy, gluten-free or low-carb diet.
There are 2 plans available:

Which Meal Delivery Service is the best?
Choosing the best meal delivery service really comes down to understanding your budget and then figuring out which one those companies is the best fit for your schedule and dietary needs.
If you can afford to commit 100% to a meal delivery service then it could be a much easier option to help improve your overall diet.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that if you know you just don’t have the time to plan, shop for and make your own healthy meals.
Otherwise my recommendation is to create some sort of balance between the meals you prep and the meals you have delivered to you.
You can also take advantage of the introductory discounts and promos they all offer so you can try them out at a lower price and figure out which one works best for you.
